Question 1:
COGPACK doesn't start anymore (previously it started) or immediately after start COGPACK displays the error message "Input past end. File: CVOR". What to do?

Answer:
What you have to do in this case is described in the COGPACK manual in chapter "Frequently Asked Questions".

Question 3:
How can I get a printout of results or profiles?

Answer:
Profiles (and in newer COGPACK Versions also Compressed profiles) can be printed in menu Results/Profiles (or Results/Compressed profiles). After you selected Person, period and reference group in menu Results/Profiles, the profile is displayed and you can print it with the "Print" button.

More results, e.g. from global score database GW.DBF, can be printed in menu Results/Output-list: e.g. by clicking on the list "GWresults summary" and selecting period, person etc. The list with the results is displayed and you can print it with the "Print" button.

Lists and profiles which you have saved earlier, can be printed in menu Editors/Reports Profiles Lists. Select the file you wish to print, then this file is displayed in the texteditor and can be printed with File/Print.

Question 4:
Should I use "Large Fonts" for a better letter reading on the screen?

Answer:
If you can't read on the screen you must use a bigger screen or you change the configuration to e.g. 800 x 600.

Never change "small fonts". Otherwise COGPACK might not work correctly.

Question 5:
What should I do if I want to copy my own series to a new computer?

Answer:
Series are stored on the Series path (usually \COGPACK\SERIES). The filename of series files is usually two characters: the first character is "S", the second character is the series mark (0-9, A-Z, @, $, #, &), which you see leftmost next to the series title in the series list in menu Training/Series (e.g. a series with the title "Every day activities" and the series mark "2" has the filename "S2").

Check which filename the series you wish to transfer to a new computer has. Then copy the series file with this filename to the series path of the new computer; e.g. by copying it with Windows Explorer to an usb-stick or a diskette and from diskette/usb-stick to the series path (usually \COGPACK\SERIES) of the new computer.

If on the series path of the new computer already exists a series file with the same filename you either have to overwright the existing series with your own series or you have to change the filename of your series file. Please note: only if you use a filename that abides by the naming rules for series mentioned above, you can use your series in menu Training/Series or menu File/Change series.

Question 6:
How can I change single exercises from Windows (32bit) to DOS-version?

Answer:
In earlier COGPACK versions (<8.0) the older DOS programms for the exercises were also delivered besides the Windows programms. Now only the DOS programs for exercises which need DirectX are delivered. Please keep that in mind when reading the following, i.e. make sure that the respective DOS program exists before changing an exercise to the DOS-version.

Open in menu Editors/*.DBF the file AL5USA.DBF (US-english version of the alternative database; for other languages you have to open the appropriate language specific AL5*.DBF)

Then go to the line where the exercise is, that you want to change. If you type a blank before the entry in field <PRGNAME2> you change the Windows version to the DOS version (field <PRGNAME>). Before typing a leading blank into field <PRGNAME2> please check if field <PRGNAME> has got an entry and no leading blank - otherwise neither the Windows nor the DOS version of the exercise will run.

Question 10:
What does it mean if I get an error message number 6 [Error 6]?

Answer:
This happens only with LCD screens and >= 15 inch screens and only with very old COGPACK versions < 6.4

If you have such a configuration a COGPACK update is advisable.

Question 11:
Some exercises don't run in the Windows version. What to do?

Answer:
This problem normally occurs only in very old COGPACK Versions. A COGPACK update is advisable.

In newer COGPACK Versions run under Windows NT there might occur problems with exercises that need DirectX (Piece-work, On-the-Road, Ball, Who-or-What:running words - resp. GuessWords:Word running letters in new COGPACK versions). Windows NT can not work with DirectX. Therefore you have to uncheck the "DIRECTX" box in Menu Options/Supervisor. Then for these exercises the DOS versions which need no DirectX will be used.

Question 14:
Why are there no profile entries for some exercises in the selected reference group?

Answer:
Possible reasons are:

- too few norm values in the choosen reference group.

- aborted exercises don't appear

- info doesn't appear

- adaptive exercise runs don't appear

Question 15:
What do I need to know for installing COGPACK with different Windows versions?

Answer:
COGPACK runs under Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or 11.
Under Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or Windows Vista it is neccessary to run the installation explicitly as administrator. Cancel the Setup program if it starts automatically. Open the Windows Explorer and look for the CD named COGPACK. Right-click on the SETUP.EXE file on the CD and then click "Run As Administrator".

Some recent NVIDIA GeForce GPUs and Intel HD Graphics do not process our directX exercises properly; for example: one cannot read the questions in exercise On-the-Road. A workaround will presumably be available in May 2012.Please contact us if you have this problem.

Under Windows 7 in some cases COGPACK graphics are only displayed correctly, if the theme "Aero" is deactivated. To deactivate this theme: Open Theme Settings by clicking the "Start" button, clicking "Control Panel", clicking "Appearance and Personalization", clicking "Personalization", and then clicking "Theme". Under Theme, select the "Windows Classic" theme in the drop-down list, and then click "OK".

Under Windows Vista in some cases COGPACK graphics need the color scheme "Aero" to be displayed correctly. To activate this color scheme: Right-click on the desktop and choose "Personalize". Click the "Window Color and Appearance" link. Then in the next screen, click the link near the bottom for "Open classic appearance properties for more color options". In the color scheme list select "Windows Aero" and click on the "Apply" button. If "Windows Aero" is not offered in the color scheme list, your system does not fulfill the requirements for Aero (e.g. Aero is not offered in the Vista Home Basic version).

If you use Windows NT there might occur problems with exercises that need DirectX (Piece-work, On-the-Road, Ball, Who-or-What:running words -(resp. GuessWords:Word running letters in new COGPACK versions). Windows NT can not work with DirectX. Therefore you have to uncheck the "DIRECTX" box in Menu Options/Supervisor. Then for these exercises the DOS versions which need no DirectX will be used.

With Windows 95 or Windows NT you might get the error message "SHLWAPI.DLL not found". In this case please install an Internet Eplorer version >=4 which contains and installs SHLWAPI.DLL.
If you get the message "You need a newer version of HHCTRL.OCX to be able to read this file" please install on your computer the file HHUPD.EXE which you find in directory "Divers" on the COGPACK CD.

With Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME the installed COGPACK Texteditor CEDIT.EXE can only handle up to 64K. Therefore you may wish to change the texteditor in menu File/Paths. Any other text editor which can edit DOS text files can be used, e.g. Microsoft Word. Please type in the full paths of the new texteditor program in menu File/Paths and make sure that the texteditor reads and saves files as DOS-text.

Question 18:
The persons are training on different computers. Therefore their results need to be saved on diskette/usb-stick each time, so that they can transport them from one PC to another. How can I do this?

Answer:
To save for each person the results of exercises each time on a data carrier (diskette/usb-stick) belonging to the person, the following steps are necessary.

1. Create - e.g. with Windows Explorer - the following directories on the data carrier:
a) directory Results (\results)
b) in directory Results the subdirectory v (\results\v)
c) in directory Results the subdirectory vv (\results\vv)
d) in directory Results the subdirectory r (\results\r)
e) directory Codes (\codes)

2. Copy the empty result files GW.LER, EW.LER and SW.LER to directory "Results" on the data carrier. You find the empty result files on the DBF path (ususally C:\COGPACK\DBF).

3. Rename the empty result files in directory "Results" to GW.DBF, SW.DBF and EW.DBF.

Note:
In newer Versions of COGPACK you can use COGPACK menu File/Establish paths A..Z instead of step 1.-3. In the menu type in the field "Target" the paths for the data carrier; e.g. "A:\" for diskette. COGPACK then automatically creates the needed directories and result files (and some more directories and files) on the data carrier. Continue with step 4.

4. Copy the individual code file of the person to directory "Codes" on the data carrier. You find the code file with the personal code as filename on the Codes path (usually C:\COGPACK\CODES).

5. On each PC where patients are going to train, start COGPACK, open menu File/Paths and:
a) change the Results path to the respective directory on the data carrier; e.g. "A:\results" for diskette,
b) change the Codes path to the respective directory on the data carrier; e.g. "A:\codes" for diskette.
Please note: when you change the paths, COGPACK always saves results to the data carrier and reads code files and results from the data carrier. So each person training on that PC needs an appropriate data carrier.

6. If the person should use Personal series when training on different computers, additionally you have to:
a) copy the directory "Series" to the data carrier
b) change the Series path to the respective directory on the data carrier (e.g. "A:\series" for diskette) with menu File/Paths on each PC.

Note:
If a person already trained on one Computer and the results should also be saved to the data carrier when you create the data carrier for this person, do the following:
- omit step 4 (copying the code file),
- export the data of the person to the data carrier with COGPACK menu Person/Export code and data,
- continue with step 5. (and perhaps step 6.),
- Import the data of the person with COGPACK menu Person/Import code and data.

Question 19:
How can I change the age of a person after he became one year older?

Answer:
The age in the personal data saved in COGPACK is not updated automatically.

You can change the age without touching the rest of the data by changing it in the code file of the person. In the code file the personal data is saved. You find the code file with the personal code as filename on the Codes path (usually C:\COGPACK\CODES). To change the age in the code file, open the code file in menu Editors/Diverse texts with File/Open, doubleclick on the appropriate directory (usually "Codes") and selecting the code file with the personal code of the person as filename.

In the code file the first number of the second line is the age. Edit this number, save your changes with File/Save and quit the texteditor.

To check your changes, use the menu Person/Code.

Question 20:
Can I edit COGPACK results with another program, e.g. SPSS or Excel?

Answer:
Yes, you can transfer the results without any problem e.g. to Excel or SPSS and edit them as you like.

The most important results are stored in the global score database GW.DBF on Results path (usually C:\COGPACK\RESULTS). The file GW.DBF is a dBaseIII file an can be opened e.g. in Excel as such a file type.

up Top of page

Question 21:
How can I transfer COGPACK together with personal data and result data to another PC?

Answer:
1. Copy all files of the Codes path of COGPACK to a data carrier (diskette/usb-stick/CD). Usually the Codes path is C:\COGPACK\CODES, thus you have to copy all files which are in the directory "Codes".

2. Copy all files and subdirectories of the Results path of COGPACK to the data carrier. Usually the Results path is C:\COGPACK\RESULTS, thus you have to copy all subdirectories and files which are in the directory "Results".

3. Install COGPACK on the new computer.

4. Transfer the previously saved files from the data carrier to the appropriate COGPACK paths of the new computer, i.e. copy the subdirectories and files to the directories where they belong (usually this will be the directory "Results" and the directory "Codes").

Question 22:
Is it possible to add a network license to an existing COGPACK-license?

Answer:
Yes. The total amount of licenses must be 11. If you have, e.g. a COGPACK with 5 additional licenses (i.e. altogether 6 licenses) you need to buy another 5 licenses to have a network license.

You can order the additional licenses on the page orders. There you will also find the current prices.

Question 25:
Why do the training exercises "Memory:Words..." and "Memory:Shopping..." not work?

Answer:
Probably you have selected the exercises "Memory:Words spoken" or "Memory:Shopping spoken". These exercises do not display text on the screen, but have an output of spoken words to the speakers or headphones. If you can't hear those words, please check if there are speakers connected to your computer and if the Windows volume setting is high enough.

Question 26:
What does it mean, when I get the message "no data in GW.DBF!" in different Results- or Editors menus (e.g. menu Results/Profiles, Results/Gvalues or Editors/Gvalues)?

Answer:
If this message occurs, there is nothing stored in the file GW.DBF on the current Results path.

If training took place possible reasons are:
1. In menu Options/Output the box "Gfile" is not checked, meaning there are no global scores stored to GW.DBF.
2. Stored data was deleted again.
3. The data is stored to another Results path, i.e. the Results path was changed in menu File/Paths.

Question 27:
How can I print files with a network printer or a printer with a USB interface?

Answer:
Since years (versions >6.9) COGPACK is delivered with the texteditor CEDIT.EXE where you can choose the printer.

Only very few taskfiles or listfiles are automatically opened in COGPACK in the texteditor EDIT.COM because of special signs in these files. Therefore these few files can not be printed with a network printer or a printer with a USB interface in COGPACK. If you want to print these files with a USB or network printer, you can open them (outside of COGPACK) in another editor, e.g. Microsoft Word. Then check the entry "Confirm conversion" in the Microsoft Word menu Extras/Options/General and click on "Coded Text" and "MS-DOS" (resp. the equivalent options for your Word version) when you open the file.

Question 28:
The exercises Piece-work, On-the-Road, Ball and Who-or-What:running words (resp. GuessWords:Word running letters in new COGPACK versions) produce an error message. What to do?

Answer:
The exercises Piece-work, On-the-Road, Ball and Who-or-What:running words (resp. GuessWords:Word running letters in new COGPACK versions) need DirectX.

If you get one of the error messages listed below (or a similar error message), DirectX may not - or not in the needed version - be installed on your computer:

Windows 95:
"DirectDrawCreate failed"
"ddraw.dll not found"
"set display mode failed"
"QueryInterface failed"
"....DirectX ..."

Windows 98, ME, 2000:
"DDraw.Dll:DirectDrawCreateEx"
".... DirectX ..."

Windows versions from Windows XP onwards should not produce such an error message because these systems are delivered with DirectX 8.1 or higher.

The solution - except for Windows NT - is installing (a newer version of) DirectX.
Microsoft advises to always install the newest DirectX version.

Special Cases:
Windows95 can work with DirectX only up to version 8.0a. This version you can download here. After the download you have to unpack the zip-file and start the file DXSetup.EXE.

Windows NT can not work with DirectX. Therefore you have to uncheck the "DIRECTX" box in COGPACK menu Options/Supervisor. Then for these exercises the DOS versions which need no DirectX will be used.

Question 30:
COGPACK shall be executed on a Windows system by users who do not have administrator access rights (The error message: "MAIN: fileopenerror..." or "create error" occurs). What shall I do?

Answer:
Change the access rights of the installed COGPACK files with the console program "cacls.exe" (for Windows XP or older Windows versions) resp. the program "icacls.exe" (for Windows Vista or Windows 7, 8, 8.1).

1. Log in as computer administrator.

2. Open a DOS-Box (in Windows XP called "Command Prompt". To open command prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt) and enter:

Windows XP or older Windows version:
cacls c:\cogpack /T /G Admin:F user1:F

where
- c:\cogpack means the directory containing COGPACK,
- Admin has to be replaced by the username of the administrator,
- user1 has to be replaced by the username of the user who shall train with COGPACK.

If there are more users (here: user1, user2 and user3) the command is:
cacls c:\cogpack /T /E /G Admin:F user1:F user2:F user3:F

Windows Vista oder Windows 7, 8, 8.1:
icacls c:\cogpack /T /grant user1:F

where
- c:\cogpack means the directory containing COGPACK,
- user1 has to be replaced by the username of the user who shall train with COGPACK.

If there are more users (here: user1, user2 and user3) the command is:
icacls c:\cogpack /T /grantuser1:F user2:F user3:F

All files in the directory COGPACK and its subdirectories can now be fully accessed (read and write) by the user user1 (resp. the users user1, user2, user3...) and for Windows XP or older also the administrator Admin.

Please note: directory names, administratornames or usernames which contain blanks, have to be embedded in quotation marks! If for example the username of the administrator is Carl Abraham and the username of user1 is George Mayer, you have to type for Windows XP for example:
CACLS c:\cogpack /T /E /G "Carl Abraham":F "George Mayer":F

Question 31:
My CD does not work, can you send me a new one?

Answer:
CDs can be damaged through transport or can have an error though being tested. In this case we will send you a replacement CD within 6 months after invoice date. However, we need the exact error message because oftenly the CD is not defect, but there are misunderstandings; e.g. somebody does not read the yellow installation note and believes that the CD should start automatically.

Question 32:
The exercise "Dictation" (and others) produces the error message "...file not found...". What shall I do?

Answer:
If COGPACK was only partially installed (compact or custom setup), the COGPACK CD has to be in the CD-ROM drive which was used for the installation (see menu File/Paths/WAV path), so that the the needed language files can be loaded.

Probably you have selected "high color" (16 bit) instead of "true color" (24 bit or 32 bit) for the Windows color settings.

You can change the color settings by:
Clicking the right mouse button on the destop background, then click on "Properties" and "Settings" (resp. the equivalent for your Windows version). Recommended resolutions are 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 or 1280x1024. If your graphic adapter does not support "true color" ("high, 24bit" or "highest, 32bit") for the color setting, choose 256 colors.

Question 36:
The exercises Piece-work, On-the-Road, Ball and Who-or-What:running words (resp. GuessWords:Word running letters in new COGPACK versions) produce problems with the color depth (message "This display card does not support ....". What to do??

Answer:
The exercises Piece-work, On-the-Road, Ball and Who-or-What:running words (resp. GuessWords:Word running letters in new COGPACK versions) are programmed with DirectX and 32 bit color depth is provided.
In rare cases it may happen, that this color depth is not supported by the graphic board of the PC and you will get an error message "This display card does not support ...".

In this case you can choose 8 or 16 bit instead of the recommended 32 bit for the DirectX exercises with the button "Bit-depth" in menu Options/Supervisor.

Question 42:
How can I restore results which were saved earlier with menu File/Backup results?

Answer:
COGPACK version > 7.91:
The standard backup procedure (without anonymization) copies the three result databases GW.DBF, EW.DBF, SW.DBF without changing their names to a path, which you can choose. To use the backup copies of the three result databases instead of the current result databases, you only have to copy - e.g. with Windows Explorer - the three backup files of GW.DBF, EW.DBF, SW.DBF from the place where you stored them (e.g. diskette, USB-stick, directory on your PC) to the Result path of COGPACK (usually C:\COGPACK\RESULTS). Then the current result databases on the Result path are overwritten with the backup copies of the files GW.DBF, EW.DBF, SW.DBF.

Older COGPACK version:
The backup procedure produces a packed archive file named BB.LZH which contains the backup copies of the three result databases. You have to copy this archive file to the COGPACK directory and unpack the backup files. To unpack them, open a DOS box and enter the two commands:
cd C:\COGPACK
LHA.EXE e BB.LZH
("e" meaning extract).
The backup copies of the three result databases are named BGW.DBF, BEW.DBF, BSW.DBF. So you first have to rename them (e.g. with Windows Explorer) to GW.DBF, EW.DBF, SW.DBF and then move them to the Result path of COGPACK (usually C:\COGPACK\RESULTS). Then the current result databases on the Result path are overwritten with the backup copies of the files GW.DBF, EW.DBF, SW.DBF.

Note:
More information about the backup procedure you will find in the COGPACK help (menu Help/COGPACK help) in the description of the menu File/Backup results.

Question 54:
In exercises Search, Quantity, Percent, Reaction or Keys I get the error message "... 6such.exe ... file not found". What to do?

Answer:
If you use the antivirus software AVIRA AntiVir this may have caused the problem. The antivirus software AntiVir wrongly detects a virus in file 6such.exe and denies access to this file. We contacted AVIRA, the producer of the software AntiVir, about the problem. They confirmed that it is a false diagnosis and promised to revise their software to solve the problem.

If AntiVir denies access to the file 6such.exe, you have to switch off AntiVir before starting COGPACK. Please make sure that the file 6such.exe still exists in the COGPACK main directory. If not, copy the file 6such.exe from the COGPACK CD to the COGPACK main directory.

Question 59:
Setup of COGPACK produces the error message "Setup Error 432: Setup has detected that uninstall shield is in use ...". What to do?

Answer:
In some cases this error may occur under Windows Vista in combination with a certain antivirus-software (e.g. Kaspersky). Usually this problem is caused by a lack of administrator rights.

Sometimes the following course of action solves the problem:
Deactivate your antivirus-software temporarily for the installation. Start the Windows Explorer and search the file setup.exe on the COGPACK-CD. Right-click the file setup.exe and choose "Run As Administrator". Then follow the displayed instructions.

If this procedure has not been successful, the Administrator account in Vista needs to be activated and you have to log on as Administrator before installing COGPACK. In Windows Vista the Administrator account is disabled and hidden by default.

Windows Vista Business:
In Windows Vista Business you can activate the Administrator in the User accounts control as follows:
Open the control panel and select System and Maintenance.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Administrative Tools.
In the new window open Computer Management.
From there open System Tools.
Now open Local Users and Groups.
And finally open Users.
Right click on the account named Administrator and select Properties.
There is a series of tick boxes in the lower half of the properties window. Deselect the one saying "Account Is Disabled".

Then you have to restart the computer and log on as Administrator before installing COGPACK. Furthermore please deactivate your antivirus-software temporarily for the installation.

Windows Vista Home:
The only way to activate the Administrator account in Vista Home is via commandline commands. Unfortunately this procedure cannot be described here.

Question 61:
Problems with viewing COGPACK Help files across the network. Mostly the help file will appear, but instead of the topic text you will see an error message like "this page cannot be displayed" or "Navigation to the webpage was canceled". Sometimes an error message like "File could not be opened: (...) CHELPUS.chm" is displayed. What to do?

Answer:
It is no longer easily possible to display the COGPACK Help in a network. This problem is caused by Microsoft, thus marker software cannot solve it.
